The “national emergency” is that trump is in power and quickly destroying our country.

Expand full comment

Exactly, but those damn RepubliCONS are not about to step forward and get called out so they can stay at the money trough!

I’d like to have an emergency presidentectomy to remove the offending splinter.

Yes, Democratic AND Republican/MAGA representatives SHOULD MOVE FORWARD TO BLOCK AND OPPOSE TRUMP, VANCE AND MUSK!

Expand full comment

Some one has to step up and stop the fool that driving the nation into the ground! The republicans will have a price to pay if they don’t respond to this idiotic clown!

Expand full comment

They’ll have a price to play regardless on how things turn out. They’ve been pulling this BS for the last 10 years, especially with the orange clown. People are not gonna put up with the games the GOP plays.

Expand full comment

The last 10 years? The last 70 years! Since the McCarthy era.

Expand full comment

I know they fear Trump’s wrath but I’m surprised the MAGA GOP is not fearful of their once adoring constituents turning on them as the economy begins to tank from these tariffs.

The plan is to just not have pesky, bothersome elections anymore.

Why worry about angry voters when you’ve taken away the right to vote?

Voting has been “suspended” in other autocratic takeovers, why not here?

Declare martial law because of the danger of an unruly, angry mob, and employ the military against their own citzens, to enforce your will on them. Enough of this outdated “ democracy” bullshit.

Expand full comment

I too fear Marshall law is not out of the question for this unlawful president but I also question if our military would uphold a command against their fellow citizens. Trump has never shown much respect for our servicemen. I know it feels like we are moving toward autocracy but the difference is we have 250 years of democracy (ironic that all this is happening now) behind us while Germany was only a few years from living under a monarchy when Hitler rose to power. I do feel though that our military needs to be reminded that “I was just following orders” did not hold up in the world court. That reminder should be on billboards all around our military bases.

Expand full comment

I have been concerned as to what our military members would do if they were ordered to fire on the neighbors and friends. I would hope they would not do that and respect the constitution. I was talking with my brother about it yesterday and he said that they would be Court, Marshall than possibly could be set in front of a firing squad as wellfor disobeying orders. He’s a former Air Force guy from the 60s.

Expand full comment

Not for disobeying an illegal order.

What is ICE doing: following orders w/o process !

An emergency order made by a non sensical pres is suspect!

So why isn’t thrse plain clothes hoodies with no badge clarification on them is “ breaking windows on women or KIDNAPOING off the streets.

Agreed. But as it stands prices will add 25%. So if you want a new car?? Ferget about it.

The Dems need to be fierce and forceful against the tariffs. It will prove them to be formidable next year and hopefully stop the destruction of the economy now.

Awesome. The Dems need to lead on these kinds of things. That Orange Thug thought everyone would capitulate.

I fear this one is all on Trump. And those who voted for him. And those who couldn’t be bothered to vote.

Definitely and don’t forget those who paved the way for this lawlessness- McConnell and the Supreme Court.

There is a private level in hell for Mitch McConnell. He orchestrated the entire TRUMP escape escapade, from tanking both impeachments, to ensuring Donald could run again in 2024. He is an evil republican lackey and I sincerely hope he suffers for all eternity. He knew exactly what he was doing. From manipulating votes, the election, and the despicable stacking of the Supreme Court with the most corrupt judges he could find. He had no thought for the consequences to the country, only his own evil ends. Truly an evil worthless Balrog from the depths of hell. BURN! MITCH BURN !

It’s Project 2025 to destroy us. Look at their timeline online. It’s not ALL Trump. You think he could have created 180 executive orders himself?! They’re just allowing him to have some of his pet projects.

It’s about time the Dems started opposing Drumpfs power grabs.

Well they have been by voting against bills… it’s the republicans that have let this happen. They just ALL voted against vets getting their jobs back … Tammy Baldwin had the bill and they ALL said no… they kiss Trumps ass for their money to grow in their pockets!!!!!

Tammy Duckworth….. sorry for the mistake…

And today Lithuanian people sent 4 American soldiers home that died there and they were so respectful and our so-called President is not meeting those soldiers here… instead he is golfing and hanging with the Saudis. I miss Joe Biden and the respect he showed during his 4 years to veterans and to disasters in our country. Trump is in a business it’s called the USA and it’s your money he is using!!!!!!!

He calls the soldiers losers

Expand full comment

If we know Trump is going to veto. Why do it? Hoping for Republican turncoats?

Expand full comment

Because with 2/3 or House and Senate they can override his veto.

Expand full comment

Do you really think you can get 2/3 of the Republican house to vote for it. The Senators are barely defecting. We need concrete ideas not hypotheticals

Expand full comment

I'm trying to look on the bright side. By the time this bill would be written and brought for a vote, the rest of the jerks who have been holding back will have heard from the constituents who are feeling the pain of these tariffs and letting their Senators and Reps know it.

Expand full comment

The bright side is that even if the measures don't pass, the GOP is forced to go on record with their vote on where they stand. This gives us a big advantage in the midterms.

Expand full comment

This is true, but a win is always preferred to a loss. Especially now, with the market close to crashing and the cost of goods about to break the banks of everyday Americans on both sides, I believe in a few weeks an impeachment proceeding will do much better than we can imagine.

Expand full comment

I'd love to see an impeachment at least as much as you would, probably much more so, but with Jackass Johnson holding the Speakers gavel, I'm not going to count on it.

Expand full comment

Tariffs will quickly get very unpopular. The plan is to force Repubs to vote FOR tariffs or AGAINST.

Each time they vote FOR, their constituents will get madder.

Repeat until constituents begin to construct scaffolds and guillotines.

That’s the plan.

Expand full comment

With you.

Expand full comment

Or until the midterms roll around, whichever comes first.

Expand full comment

I feel hopeless and angry about this also but you must try. If you don't try you've instantly failed.

Maybe some rethugs will cross over in these terrible times.

Expand full comment

The ones who don't come around will be summarily and unceremoniously dismissed in 2026.

Expand full comment

Hypothetical can turn to concrete ideas that work. We don't know until we try and something click. Something works because we tried until we succeeded. Trying beats failure.

Expand full comment

We need 2/3 of the entire senate, not just Repugs. Right now, there are 53 Repugs, 45 Dems, and 2 independents, both of whom caucus with the Dems.

We need 67 senators to override a veto, so we'd need 12 Repugs.

Expand full comment

If the President vetoes a bill, Congress can attempt to override the veto.

Override Process:

To override a veto, both the House of Representatives and the Senate must vote to override it by a two-thirds majority.

Pocket Veto:

If Congress adjourns before the President has had 10 days to act on a bill, the bill does not become law, and this is known as a pocket veto.

Checks and Balances:

The veto power and the override process are examples of checks and balances between the legislative and executive branches, ensuring no single branch becomes too powerful.

Expand full comment

"...ensuring no single branch becomes too powerful."

Which these days is a bit overstated. Our system is pathetically dependent on the "honor" system and "norms". We now have a president - and a bunch of congressional sycophants - who has no honor, and seems to go out of his way to violate every "norm" possible, just for the fun of it.

Expand full comment

But the Congress check is it doing its job!

Expand full comment

Dems plus enough Reps could make it veto-proof. The question is how many Republicans have a spine.

Expand full comment

We'll need at least a dozen of them. A dozen Repugs with spines? That's a pretty tall order.

Expand full comment

His “decree” is relying on his other declaration of a national emergency (which would go away if he went away). I Dems want to kill the national emergency so that we don’t end up with an international crisis

Expand full comment

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Never mind the loophole, end the phony national emergency. Better still, end the real national emergency by removing him from the white house - by force if necessary.

The majority of the country want the drastic and insane power grab of the Trump administration STOPPED! Go Democrats, Independents and sane republicans!!

Expand full comment

ASAP is NOT too soon to begin to constrict options for Trump. He is 150 years out of date on tariffs. Republicans gotta get a backbone, including the obsequious leader of the House.

I would love Dems to have a clean sweep next year if enough Rs aren't scared of their voters than the felon. Getting a 20-35 seat majority in the House and flipping the Senate would be a massive rebuke to FDJT's tariffs insanity.

Republicans do NOT have backbones, just like they do not have the BALLS to stand up to this dictator wanna be. GROW A PAIR AND TAKE A STAND, for your country, for your own family for crap’s sake!
