She will only earn kudos for this stance AFTER she casts her vote. Her track record demands this.

This

Exactly this

Her history, behavior patterns, track record to date are abysmal.

She says a lot of things - let's see what she actually does.

So in the final tally she voted against Patel.

Not about to congratulate her because she is (again, always) too little, too late - and she counts votes. If she was casting a “deciding vote” - she likely would have voted for him.

Yes. This is a harsh assessment. But it’s what she does and, ultimately, who she is.

Oh - and McConnell, whom some had thought had found his moral compass, etc - also voted FOR Patel.

This is who they are. In the tank for Trump, Putin, fascism.

Eight years late.

I agree with you on that point. She'll change her mind when someone gets to her. Until she votes NO, only then will I give her credit for doing the right thing for our country

I just hope sticks to her guns this time

She doesn't have any moral fortitude she will get her arm twisted.

I’ll wait until she votes. She’s been such a disappointment over the years. Remember the famous - “I think he’s learned his lesson” comment when they tried to impeach him the first time? She’s one of the reasons he’s back.

Her constituents should vote her out. Why haven’t they done so already?

We tried…sadly she squeaked through in the last election.

Keep working on it. Don’t give up. You’ll get there eventually. I’m all for term limits too. If those were in place, she’d be gone.

Now Susan, please fulfill your obligation to this country. By enlisting the support of other Republican senators to join you. In voting against the Patel nomination. Surely after five terms, you have been able to make alliances with other senators of conscience. Mitch McConnell should welcome the chance to try to make amends for past enabling of the destruction of the Republican Party!

Exactly!! She only votes against her party when she knows the vote won’t alter the outcome in their favor.

I’ll believe it when I see it. Tillis was also a No on Hegseth and flipped at the last second. All it takes is one phone call from Elmo.

Expand full comment

I read (but have not confirmed) that Tillis flipped after he got credible death threats. What a joke!

Update: Amazingly, both Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski joined all Democrats in voting No. Patel was confirmed 51-49.

It’s been my experience that Collins’ will say one thing, but in the end she reneges with glee no less, so consider the source and don’t get your hopes up 😡

Too little too late, but we should be thankful for any crumb.

Expand full comment

No, we should not be thankful. Her vote is meaningless. If her vote made a difference in whether Patel is confirmed or not, she would not vote in opposition. She was and still is a coward and her constituents in Maine should realize this and vote accordingly.

We do and we will!

Crumb? Anything positive coming from her mouth is a buffet.

Expand full comment

She always says that and then disappoints us. Every time. I don’t believe a word she says. Totally ineffectual.

WTH is this statement by Collins: “Mr. Patel has had 16 years of dedicated public service”. Dedicated to what? Besides his own self interest and Trump enemies lists. 🙄

Anyone remember Robert Hanssen? Charles McGonigal? Respected FBI agents who did credible work. And were Russian spies. Hanssen died serving life sentences. McGonigal is only serving 50 months. And there are others.

Yeah, sure Susan. We’ll see how long it takes you to walk that back. In 3…2…

Great, we need a few more! He is a dangerous nominee!

Expand full comment

We shall see. She has a history of flip-flopping on issues depending on who she last speaks to.

Finally! Too bad she couldn’t protect us from RFK, Jr.

Collins gets a pass here as she will probably not be responsible for defeating Patel. It is highly likely that she tested the water before declaring her opposition. Had her vote in opposition been the deciding vote, that is, would it tip the balance against Patel, I'm positive she would not oppose this nomination. In other words, her opposition is meaningless and would not have occurred if her vote actually made a difference.

I know someone well who is an analyst for the FBI in Washington, DC. He/She has been for nearly 20 years. A while back, someone from trump's government came to her/his office and everyone was asked if they participated in the January 6th investigation. If they had, they were fired. Pure retribution.

Thank goodness, Susan Collins has come to the right conclusion! Hopefully enough Republicans will vote NO on a man who has an enemies list (published in his book) and who has been busy decimating the very agency he’s supposed to head. VOTE NO ON PATEL! Investigate Musk and DOGE and stop the firing of federal workers and the dismantling of our government by oligarchs and grifters!

Finally, she found the line.

Give her a minute. She's proven she can let go very easily.
