Well, I live in Chicago and voted for Pritzker, so I have that bias.

Everybody here knows where the Venezuelan immigrants hang out, begging for food money for their families. Whole families. Out in front of the Target in my building, at the gateway into the parking lot at Whole Foods down Broadway. Why? Because they aren’t allowed by law to work in jobs. Chicago is running out of money to help them. They were sent here unannounced by the governor of Texas, to “show” us something something something. Never mind that they are human beings. It’s already shameful because of Republicans. I’m glad the governor is standing up for them, but that isn’t enough. We need to have better policy, but we won’t get it under the current president and his minions. It’s the immigrants who will suffer and who are suffering. It’s so sad to watch it happening and feel so helpless.

By law, they are not allowed to work until they have their green card, which, depending on many factors, can take months to years. That’s why we even have undocumented workers, to a great extent. You get the green card when you are a permanent resident. So it’s not a matter of getting them or letting them work. It’s much more complicated than that. A better thing to do might be just issuing everyone a green card when they arrive and setting them up with classes in English and making sure they have jobs. They should learn enough English to go shopping and to fill out a written application for a job. But of course then it would be harder for rich people to exploit them by under paying them. If this were a Christian country maybe that could happen, with Christians like Bishop Budde. But of course then the so-called Christians in our country are nutty and deliberately stupid so that ain’t happening anytime soon.

Is there a temporary residency that allows workers seasonal work perhaps, or ?

Yes. Many people only come here during harvest times. When I lived in Massachusetts the immigrants arrived in late summer to harvest winter squash and pumpkins. The H2-A visa program is for that purpose.

You don't think a lot of the immigrants would do that if they could? Learn laws and regulations before spouting off

I’d tell you to hire them under the table for domestic service (that would be real resistance as long as nobody took advantage of their plight with slave wages) but MAGAt neighbours would probably stool you. Gah

That wouldn’t help. Abbott is doing it to make the point that Texas can’t take care of all of them. But being Texas, I’m pretty certain they didn’t try that hard.

I have no idea of whether he asked for more federal aid. I assume not. He thinks border policy is set by Blue northern states that don’t have a lot of immigrants to deal with, which is a clear indication he has no understanding of the roles Chicago and New York have traditionally played in not just welcoming immigrants and making way for them but also in having huge enclaves of them residing within city limits.

What’s happening now is that the housing affordability crisis has slammed into this influx of immigrants. There is a paucity of places to house these immigrants. Sites have been suggested only to prove not feasible because of pollution.

And that is probably 60% the fault of private equity buying up houses and taking them off the market so they can rent them at sky high prices. There is also NIMBYism. But I don’t think that’s a huge problem here. It is in California for sure. Here it’s just more people, less housing, and too little housing that’s affordable and hard to get into.

Democracy depends on these strong leaders speaking out and standing up to the authoritarian regime, and this is definitely no time for appeasement. We will see the true character of our democratic leadership and will never forget the ones who did nothing to protect the people.

HELL YEAH! Both Pritzger and Shapiro are WELL qualified to run the country. 🍊🤡 is way asinine, and the more asinine he behaves every day, the easier will be the re-assumption of Democrats in government. Pritzger and Shapiro both should be as loud as possible, daily, calling 🍊🤡 on his 💩
