I was in your grandfather’s shutdown in 95-96. During that period, they all wanted the government working but had political differences on the budget only. During that long shutdown, ONLY political appointees were allowed to work at nonessential (essential were LE, defense, etc) agencies or offices. Can you imagine an office where feds were considered nonessential today monitoring loans, health, contracts or string policy?! It would stay closed for months or forever…further decimating the federal government.

Schumer was right… pick your battles in a war!!!!

Schumer and the other 10 Dems who voted for a continuing CR are spineless wastes of air and are no better than the GOP MAGAs. May they endure much pain this weekend and kiss their legacy’s goodbye. F them!

What a colossal disappointment. Schumer must be getting soft in the head. He ought to be really, really ashamed.

Spineless! As a fed govt employee, I strongly feel this CR should NOT be supported by the Democrats. Yes, a furlough would be painful, but it will be even more devastating if this CR is passed. So tired of the cowering by the Democrats and the blind stupidity of the kool-aid drunk Republicans.

Maybe Schumer just wants to hurry up and get on his break so he can start his book tour. Our government is being dismantled, the Constitution is being ignored. We have an unelected South African illegally sifting through our classified data and illegally firing 1,000's of federal employees. What is Schumer's response? Go on tour to rally Americans and lead the resistance against this coup, right? Ah, no. He is going on a book tour to promote his latest book. You can find the info on Eventbrite.

Sure, LETS FORGET THE REAL ENEMY; MAGA. So we can beat up Schumer instead. Makes "perfect" sense? Not based on the history of shutdowns. The ONLY time a Democratic President WON a Government Shutdown without a Democratic House majority or a Senate majority was Bill Clinton in 1995. The ONLY times a republican President LOST a Government Shutdown was in 1990 under Bush Sr. when both the House and Senate had Democratic majorities and in 2018-2019 under tRump when the House had a Democratic majority.

Outcomes of past "Shutdowns" here:

1980 Carter shutdown - Draw. Lasted 1 day, Dems controlled the House/Senate, cost $700,000, minor affects to FTC. No real win but aircraft carrier funding cut per Carter.

1981 Reagan shutdown(1)-Win. Lasted 1 day, Dems controlled the House/not Senate, temp furlough of 241,000 federal workers, cost $80 million, minor gov effects. Small win for Reagan because he got $4 billion in spending cuts after proposing $8 billion in cuts.

1984 Reagan shutdown(2)-Win. Lasted 4 hours, Dems controlled the House/not Senate, temp furlough of 500,000 federal workers, cost $65 million, Win for Reagan because Dems dropped water project and civil rights measures Reagan opposed and restored funding to Contra Rebels in Nicaragua that Reagan supported. Reagan won re-election in 1984.

1986 Reagan shutdown(3)-Win. Lasted 4 hours, Dems controlled the House/not Senate, affected all agencies, temp furlough of 500,000 federal workers. cost $62 million. Win for Reagan because passage of an Omnibus Spending Bill.

1990 Bush Sr shutdown-Loss. Lasted 3 days, Dems controlled the House/Senate, cost $3 million. Loss for Bush because he broke his "read my lips" promise of no new taxes which he proposed. Bush Sr lost re-election in 1992.

1995 Clinton shutdown-Win. Lasted 5 days, Reps controlled the House/Senate, cost $400 million. continued.

1995 Clinton shutdown (continued), lasted 21 days, temp furlough of 1.1 million federal workers, cost $400 million. Win for Clinton, smaller government spending cuts and some tax increases on the wealthy. Gingrich lost public opinion because he said the shutdown was due to Clinton putting him in the back of Air Force One. Clinton Won re-election in 1996.

2013 Obama shutdown-Win. Lasted 16 days, Reps controlled the House/not Senate, affected all agencies, temp furlough of 800,000 federal workers, cost $2.1 billion. Win for Obama because de-funding of Affordable Care Act was stopped. Public opinion turned against the GOP as the shutdown went on, yet "Obamacare" became unpopular as "ACA" became popular in public opinion. Notes: Citizens United Decision in 2010. Facebook went public in 2012. Twitter/X went public in 2013.

2018 tRump shutdown(1)-Win. Lasted 3 days, Reps controlled the House/Senate, affected all agencies, temp furlough of 693,000 federal workers. Win for tRump because DACA or Dream Act rules established by Obama ended because Senate Dems ended their filibuster due to negative public polling and taking flake for "not paying" the Military families or Vets.

2018-2019 tRump shutdown(2)-Loss. Lasted 35 days, Reps controlled the House/Senate in lame duck session then Dems controlled the House in 2019. Affected some agencies, temp furlough of 380,000 federal workers and 420,000 forced to work without a payday, cost $5 billion. Loss for tRump because the $5.7 billion funding to build the Mexican Border failed to pass Congress and due to public opinion that turned against him funding the wall with taxpayer money.
