Former Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL) said that the red wave never came because of abortion and Trump. He called Trump the best thing for Democrats since FDR.
Video:
CNN’s Jim Acosta asked Rooney why the red wave never materialized.
The former congressman answered:
I think two things. Abortion was one. And the journal had an article this week about polling, about abortion. And in 2018 and 2020, 10% of Democrats, I’m paraphrasing, 80% of Republicans say as their important issue, and that flip-flopped in 2022. So, that was an issue.
And then, we have Trump. And Trump, recruiting all these terrible, election denier, anti-democratic candidates, had a reverberation, as I think Paul and Jon Meacham mentioned. As well as all the noise he put out into the electorate, both for Democrats and against Republicans. This guy is the best thing for Democrats since FDR.
Rooney is no longer in Congress, but voices like his that are laying the blame for the Republican midterm election failure at the feet of Donald Trump are getting louder.
Former Rep. Rooney was right. Trump is the greatest turnout weapon that the Democrats have. If Trump shows up in a swing state, non-Republican voters vote against the candidate he supports.
The fastest way for Republicans to lose a swing state election is to have Trump anywhere near it.
Trump is poison for the Republican Party, and the longer he stays in their system, the more lethal he becomes.
