Donald Trump tried to claim that a night where he led his party straight into the dumpster of midterm defeat was a great night.
Trump posted on Truth Social, “174 wins and 9 losses, A GREAT EVENING, and the Fake News Media, together with their partner in crime, the Democrats, are doing everything possible to play it down. Amazing job by some really fantastic candidates!”
Democrats especially should be celebrating Trump because he likely got them the next Pennsylvania governor and senator. Trump has seen an entire slate of his election deniers crash and burn, and the candidates that appeared with him and won were mostly in red states (Florida, Ohio, Iowa).
Trump has again demonstrated that he is totally toxic to voters outside of the Republican Party. His appeal to help Republican candidates is limited to GOP primaries and red states.
Republicans came into the midterm expecting to win 20-40 House seats and take control of the Senate. Instead, their net gains in the House could be in the single digits, and a GOP Senate majority is looking unlikely.
Ron DeSantis had a great night as he outperformed other Republican candidates around the country and can take credit for the House gains after he personally got Republicans four seats with a map that he gerrymandered.
For Donald Trump, it was a terrible night. A historically bad midterm election that showed that if he is given the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, Trump will run the GOP into the ground.
