Democrats just gained full control of the Michigan state legislature for the first time in 40 years and enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution.
“The fight over abortion rights and Whitmer’s large margin over Republican Tudor Dixon at the top of the ticket helped power Democrats in down ballot races,” the Detroit News reported. Their potential majorities in the Legislature could overhaul how Lansing operates. The GOP has held at least one of the two chambers since Ronald Reagan was in the White House.”
The Detroit News pointed out that “while votes were still being tallied Wednesday morning and not all of the key races had been called by the Associated Press, House Democrats said they would hold 56 of the 110 seats in the chamber, a slim, one-vote majority.”
It’s not just Democrats saying that. The Detroit News confirmed that House Republicans “conceded their 12-year-long hold on the majority” and “Michigan Senate Republicans acknowledged they had lost the majority Wednesday morning.”
Michigan Democrats have not held the state Senate since 1984.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer also won reelection and wrote this morning on Twitter:
Damn it feels good to be a Michigander.

In Michigan, abortion was on the ballot quite literally after a prolonged fight with Republicans over font size.
Proposition 3 was passed 56.2% to 43.8% as of the latest tabulation by the AP (votes are still being counted but it has been called). Michigan voted to enshrine the constitutional right to reproductive freedom including abortion and contraception.
“Proposal 3’s passage marks an historic victory for abortion access in our state and in our country – and Michigan has paved the way for future efforts to restore the rights and protections of Roe v. Wade nationwide,” Bridge Michigan reports Reproductive Freedom campaign spokesperson Darci McConnell saying.
Republicans can thank a map drawn by an independent citizens commission (finally), Gov. Whitmer’s popularity and the conservatives who overturned Roe v Wade for their epic loss.
Roevember is real and it just undid some Reagan-era damage.
