President Biden hit on why Democrats were successful while Trump and the GOP failed in the midterm. The answer is empathy.
Video:
April Ryan asked Biden about putting empathy back into our culture, and he said:
Part of what I think leadership requires, and I hope I meet the standard, is letting people know you understand their problem. Again, my dad used to have an interesting — he said I don’t expect them to solve my problem, but I expect them to know what they are, understand them.
…
And the empathy is not just talking about it. It’s communicating to people you genuinely understand. And I hope a lot of people don’t understand. Because I don’t want people having to know the pain. But the second piece of that is let them know you are there to help. You’re there to help.
…
And empathy reflects itself not just in what a person demonstrates they understand but knowing what people need and helping to make it happen. And we’re trying to do that.
Republicans and Trump lost the midterm election because they didn’t care about people’s problems. Trump and the GOP tried to use people’s problems to gain political power, but they never showed a trace of care about the problems or had a plan to solve them.
One of the comments that have popped up frequently from voters who were interviewed on election day is that Joe Biden was there for them and helped them during the pandemic.
Biden and the Democrats tried to do things to make life better for the American people and voters noticed.
Trump and the Republicans failed in the midterm because they were not sincere and lacked empathy for the American people.
A less empathic president and party might have gotten blown out in this midterm because they had not built a connection with the American people, but Biden’s empathy separates him and his party from Trump and the GOP, and it is part of the reason why Democrats were successful in the midterm.
