Donald Trump is under ongoing criminal investigation, and the DOJ wants to keep the evidence under wraps because it would jeopardize national security.
In their new filing arguing for some continued secrecy, the Justice Department made clear the seriousness of the ongoing criminal investigation, saying it “implicates highly classified materials.”
“Disclosure of the government’s affidavit at this stage would also likely chill future cooperation by witnesses whose assistance may be sought as this investigation progresses, as well as in other high-profile investigations,” the Justice Department wrote. “The fact that this investigation implicates highly classified materials further underscores the need to protect the integrity of the investigation and exacerbates the potential harm if information is disclosed to the public prematurely or improperly.”
The search was just the first step, and it is clear from the DOJ’s response in court that they are investigating Trump for much more than possessing documents that he should not have had in his possession.
The unanswered question is, what was Trump doing with the top secret and classified documents? He wasn’t keeping the documents around as tokens of his White House years.
Donald Trump could be facing multiple criminal investigations both at the state and federal levels, and the Justice Department is not going to play along with Republicans trying to bait them into playing politics to muddy the waters and take the focus off of Trump.
