Ten leaders of the Pennsylvania Republican Party have endorsed Democrat Josh Shapiro for governor over Doug Mastriano.
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported:
In what analysts are calling an unprecedented move in an era of extreme hyperpartisanship, a group of Republican leaders — including a number of former officials who have been stalwarts of Pennsylvania’s GOP establishment for decades in Harrisburg and D.C. — is bucking their party to endorse Democrat Josh Shapiro for governor.
….
The list includes two former U.S. representatives, Charlie Dent and Jim Greenwood; former state House Speaker Denny O’Brien; former Lt. Gov. and longtime state Sen. Robert Jubelirer; and former state Supreme Court Justice Sandra Schultz Newman.
Pennsylvania Contains A Lot Of Moderate Republicans
The Trump base is far-right in Pennsylvania, but there is also a large number of moderate who cross over and vote for Democrats like Sen. Bob Casey and Gov. Tom Wolf. The moderate Republicans are also why Sen. Pat Toomey had a Senate career.
Doug Mastriano is the furthest right statewide candidate in modern Pennsylvania political history. The fact that Republican leaders are willing to cross party lines and endorse moderate Democrat Josh Shapiro sends a message about the danger that Mastriano, who is a 2020 election denier and 1/6 insurrectionist, poses to the Keystone State.
Democracy is on the ballot in Pennsylvania along with reproductive choice and voting rights.
The endorsements of Shapiro are a signal that Mastriano must be defeated.
