After Raising It 3 Times Under Trump, Republicans Say They Now Disagree With Debt Ceiling Hike

Last updated on July 18th, 2023 at 01:40 pm

Senate Republicans are refusing to negotiate a suspension of the debt ceiling, saying that they now disagree with the policy after doing it three times under Trump.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) told reporters:

Republicans didn’t disagree with raising the debt limit when Trump was president

According to The Washington Post:

GOP lawmakers during the Trump administration voted three times to suspend the debt ceiling. Federal policymakers added trillions of dollars to the federal debt during Trump’s presidency — significantly more than has been added by Biden — with the support of Republican leaders. The $28 trillion national debt rose by roughly $7.8 trillion during the Trump administration.

Republicans are refusing to pay for the debt that they ran up.

If the country defaults, members of the military won’t get paid, Social Security recipients won’t get their checks, and the economy will go back into recession. This would all happen because Republicans are refusing to pay for the debt that they ran up.
Republicans won’t negotiate. They think that they are winning by being irresponsible, but voters aren’t stupid. The American people understand what Republicans are trying to pull. Even more importantly, they know that the Senate GOP’s behavior is a sample of what will come if they win back control of the Senate in 2022.
Voters should reward Democrats for doing what Republicans won’t by putting the country first.
