Eric Swalwell Calls Trump A ‘Crime Spree In Progress’ Who Keeps Proving His Own Guilt

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) called Donald Trump a “crime spree in progress” on Monday and said the president is proving his own guilt.

During an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, the Democratic lawmaker said there are reams of evidence showing that Trump is guilty of shaking down a foreign power for political dirt, but it’s the president’s own behavior that is the clearest sign that even Trump knows he’s guilty.

“This is a crime spree in progress,” Rep. Swalwell said. “It’s this simple: Innocent people do not intimidate witnesses. Guilty people who are worried about what witnesses could say to harm them do.”

Rep. Swalwell said:

This is a crime spree in progress. We have what the president did with the Ukrainians in his shakedown scheme of asking them to investigate his opponent. But he’s obstructing Congress’ investigation, he’s intimidating witnesses as they’re testifying or in the case of Miss Williams this weekend, right before they testify. And, Chris, if you’re someone sitting at home wondering what does it mean, why should I care if he’s intimidating them? It’s this simple. Innocent people do not intimidate witnesses. Guilty people who are worried about what witnesses could say to harm them do.

Only guilty people intimidate witnesses

The behavior we saw play out during the Mueller report saga – Trump throwing tantrums, intimidating witnesses and obstructing the investigation – is again rearing its ugly head as the impeachment inquiry rolls on.

What’s different about the Ukraine scandal is that the facts are too clear for Trump to muddy up. The Mueller report was damning, yes, but the evidence was complex. This gave the president and his allies an opening to create their own narrative.

The high crimes and misdemeanors being investigated by the House right now, on the other hand, are much more clear-cut and damning. It’s why GOP attempts to defend the president have failed, and it’s why Trump has to resort to flagrant witness intimidation.

It’s not just Democrats who believe Trump is guilty. The president’s behavior demonstrates that even he knows it.
