Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) took the new Republican defense of Trump for a test drive by saying that Trump publicly engages in wrongdoing all the time.
Rep. Thornberry said on ABC’s This Week, “There’s not really anything the President said in that phone call that’s different from what he says in public all the time, so is there some sort of abuse of power that rises to that threshold that is different than the American people have been hearing for three years? I don’t hear that.”

The new defense is that what Trump did was wrong, but he does it all of the time, so he can’t be impeached for it.
Republicans are admitting that their president is a criminal, but he is not an impeachable criminal.
If that is the best that Republicans can come up with, these impeachment hearings are going to be a total disaster for Trump.
Republicans have no defense for their president, but since he is spying on them and threatening to ruin their careers if they criticize him, they are spouting whatever lame excuse that they can think of to try to justify not supporting impeachment.
