House Democrats have entered the next phase of impeachment, so Trump is trying to bribe Senate Republican, who will serve on his impeachment trial jury.
Politico reported that Trump is raising money for the cash strapped campaigns of incumbent Republican Senators:
Trump is tapping his vast fundraising network for a handful of loyal senators facing tough reelection bids in 2020. Each of them has signed onto a Republican-backed resolution condemning the inquiry as “unprecedented and undemocratic.”
….
On Wednesday, the Trump reelection campaign sent a fundraising appeal to its massive email list urging donors to provide a contribution that would be divided between the president and Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, and North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis. Each of the senators are supporting the anti-impeachment resolution despite being endangered in 2020.
In other words, Trump is trying to buy his way out of being convicted and removed from office by throwing money at Republican Senators who could be facing defeat in 2020. Trump’s behavior reveals how transactional his relationship is with Senate Republicans. Democrats supported Bill Clinton during impeachment because he was their president. Republicans support Trump because he pays them off.
Republican Senators aren’t supporting Trump because they believe in his innocence. They are sticking with the president because he is giving them funds that they desperately need to hang on to their seats.
As Trump complains about the “unfairness” of impeachment, he is trying to buy off the jury at his trial.
