Camp David, which once hosted Winston Churchill and settled matters of war and peace, has been reduced to hosting Jared Kusher and Ivanka Trump’s anniversary party.
Vanity Fair reported, “For the Trump family, the deepening threat of impeachment and investigations into close associates will briefly take a back seat. This weekend Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary and have invited their families and a number of close friends to Camp David to celebrate, according to three people familiar with the plan. All of the couple’s siblings are expected to attend, as is President Donald Trump, one person said.”
Camp David is where Roosevelt hosted Churchill in 1943. It is where Jimmy Carter negotiated the Camp David Accords, Ronald Reagan hosted Margaret Thatcher, and Barack Obama hosted the G8, so it is fitting that the retreat with such a distinguished legacy has been reduced to playing the role of country club for Jared and Ivanka’s wedding anniversary.
Of course, the Trumps are abusing Camp David in this way, as they have no knowledge of or respect for history. Camp David is also a venue that won’t cost Trump any money, as the use of the presidential retreat for an anniversary party will be on the taxpayer’s dime.
Trump has done nothing, but complain about Camp David, which is where the White House sends him when they want to ground him and keep him away from one of his golf courses.
Camp David deserves better, and hopefully, the next president will treat the historic location with the respect that it deserves.
