House Democrats are keeping it simple and pursuing one sweeping abuse of power impeachment charge against Trump for the Ukraine scandal.
NBC News reported:
House Democrats are zeroing in on a framework for their impeachment case against President Donald Trump that will center on a simple “abuse of power” narrative involving the president’s actions regarding Ukraine, according to multiple people familiar with the deliberations.
….
Democratic House committee chairs and leaders are still debating the need for additional articles or charges that extend beyond the president’s dealings with Ukraine, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been adamant that the case against Trump must be targeted and easy to communicate in order to build public support, according to those familiar with discussions.
Speaker Pelosi is correct. The Ukraine scandal has resonated with the American people because it is easy to understand. Democrats don’t need long and detailed articles of impeachment. Trump abused his power by withholding aid from Ukraine unless they would investigate Joe Biden.
Even though Mick Mulvaney tried to walk it back, the White House has admitted the quid pro quo.
The whistleblower complaint, the witness testimony, and the released transcript of the phone call all add up to a powerful case against Trump for presidential abuse of power. Trump’s crime was not complicated, so impeachment should be handled in a straightforward way.
