The Manhattan DA has subpoenaed eight years of Donald Trump’s tax returns as part of a criminal investigation into hush-money payments before the 2016 election.
The New York Times reported:
State prosecutors in Manhattan have subpoenaed President Trump’s accounting firm to demand eight years of his personal and corporate tax returns, according to several people with knowledge of the matter.
The subpoena opens a new front in a wide-ranging effort to obtain copies of the president’s tax returns, which Mr. Trump initially said he would make public during the 2016 campaign but has since refused to disclose.
The subpoena was issued by the Manhattan district attorney’s office late last month, soon after it opened a criminal investigation into the role that the president and his family business played in hush-money payments made in the run-up to the election.
Trump is apparently under investigation for filing false tax returns in the state of New York. What began as an investigation into the hush money payments that Trump made to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal looks to be growing into a full-scale investigation into whether Trump committed multiple felonies by filing false tax returns.
Donald Trump has no presidential power to stop a state investigation or prosecution. Trump can’t pardon himself out of state charges. If prosecutors indict Trump, they are also likely to indict his children Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric who are officials in the Trump Organization.
Michael Cohen is cooperating with prosecutors and telling them where the bodies are buried.
New York appears to be building a potentially massive case against Donald Trump, and the news about his tax returns is another step toward indicting this president.
