After Donald Trump pressured an unnamed spokesman from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to publicly substantiate his ludicrous Hurricane Dorian forecast, thousands of federal weather workers are reportedly furious.
According to The Daily Beast, “The head of the union that represents federal weather workers said Friday that his members are ‘shocked, stunned and irate’ that the federal agency whose workers they represent put out a statement siding with President Trump in the increasingly bizarre dispute over whether Hurricane Dorian was on track to hit Alabama.”
More from The Daily Beast report:
“Never ever before has their management thrown them under the bus like this,” said Dan Sobien, president of the National Weather Service Employees Organization, which represents 4,000 employees under the umbrella of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“These are the people risking their lives flying into hurricanes and putting out forecasts that save lives. Never before has their management undercut their scientifically sound reasoning and forecasts,” Sobien told The Daily Beast.
The president pressuring the NOAA to clean up his Dorian mess is too little too late. We all knew he was wrong about his Alabama warning in real time.
After all, immediately after Trump falsely said Alabama was at risk, the National Weather Service in Birmingham hit back in a Twitter post.
“Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama. The system will remain too far east,” the NWS of Birmingham said.
The new statement from the NOAA was a clear effort – instigated by a weak and desperate president – to use the government to make himself look like less of the fool we all know him to be.
By hijacking the NOAA, Donald Trump is destroying the credibility of one of the most non-partisan and important government entities, and it could put American lives at risk.
