There is one possible reason that has emerged that could explain why Donald Trump ditched his trip to Denmark, and it has to do with Barack Obama being far more popular around the world than the current president.
In a discussion on MSNBC on Wednesday night, Sam Seder pointed out that Obama was set to travel to Denmark not long after Trump’s planned visit, and the current president didn’t want to be humiliated by his predecessor.
“It is my understanding that Obama is going to be in the country,” Seder said. “Maybe he feels like, I don’t want the baby blimp and then the next week they’re throwing roses at Obama.”
In other words, it might not be about the Denmark prime minister rejecting Trump’s silly idea to buy Greenland after all. It might just be another example of Trump having some severe Obama envy.

Of all the really crazy things that have come out of his mouth and decisions really just in the past 24 hours or so, this is the most bizarre in some ways. You can come up with explanations for the other things, like it appeals to his base. I don’t know if it’s actually going on but you can pose it on it. I don’t know where the constituency is for like we really need to show Denmark who is boss, but it is my understanding that Obama is going to be in the country. … Obama is supposedly visiting in three or four weeks and so maybe he feels like, I don’t want the baby blimp and then the next week they’re throwing roses at Obama.
Since Donald Trump took office in 2017, the world’s confidence in the United States has taken a major nosedive. Trump is unpopular at home, but he’s even less popular around the globe.
According to Pew Research Center, American allies basically across the board view the U.S. much less favorably now than when Barack Obama was in the Oval Office.
So while it’s not clear exactly why the president canceled his trip to Denmark, it’s certainly a possibility that Trump simply didn’t want Obama to show up after he left and demonstrate how a real president should be received on the world stage.
