Trump is trying to hold expanded background checks hostage in exchange for money for his border wall.
Trump tweeted:
We cannot let those killed in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, die in vain. Likewise for those so seriously wounded. We can never forget them, and those many who came before them. Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying….

….this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!

Trump is trying to use the deaths of mass shooting victims to get money for his wall. When Trump talks about immigration policy, he is talking about money for his wall. He throws in other proposals like ending asylum and visa programs, but what he really wants is what Congress will not give him, which is money for his wall.
Donald Trump didn’t mention background checks in his televised statement, because they aren’t part of his plan. Trump talked about Democrats and Republicans coming together to pass legislation. He didn’t mean gun legislation. He meant that Republicans might agree to expanded background checks if Trump gets money for his wall.
The president tried to pull this same stunt with DREAMERS, and with migrants coming across the border.
He is trying to exploit the deaths of mass shooting victims for wall money.
Trump has replaced public policy with thuggery. It hasn’t worked yet, and it’s not going to work now.
