Counterterrorism expert Malcolm Nance continued to sound the alarm about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Saturday, saying that McConnell is a walking national security nightmare.
During a discussion with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, Nance said that McConnell has been boosting Russia since 2016, when he refused to join former President Barack Obama in calling out Russian election interference.
In the years since, McConnell has helped lift sanctions against Russia, and now he’s standing in the way of election security measures that would prevent a repeat of the attacks we saw in 2016.
Nance believes McConnell’s loyalty to Russia over his own country is a direct result of the Kentucky senator essentially being paid off by Russian companies pouring money into his state.
“It’s the same people – ex-communists, former Soviet intelligence agents and their oligarchs –who now act like guys at a strip club throwing $100 bills out, and the Republicans are there to take every one of those bills,” Nance said.
He added, “We are being infiltrated through a global oligarchy that views money as the most definitive way to destroy American democracy.”

It’s a national security nightmare we’re involved with. I don’t find it funny but I do think that Moscow Mitch is absolutely appropriate here. Mitch McConnell was the man who stopped in August 2016 any reference to the Russians attacking our election when Barack Obama wanted to warn the nation. He said he would not sign off on that. Then he helps lift the sanctions on Russian companies. Then that Russian company and its Russian subsidiaries throw money into Kentucky. In the old days there used to be this image of the insidious Soviet claws coming up over the Iron Curtain and coming into America through the Communist Party USA. That doesn’t exist anymore. It’s the same people – ex-communists, former Soviet intelligence agents and their oligarchs –who now act like guys at a strip club throwing $100 bills out, and the Republicans are there to take every one of those bills. We are being infiltrated through a global oligarchy that views money as the most definitive way to destroy American democracy.
When you cut past the disturbing fact that one of the most powerful Republicans in the government is acting as a Russian asset, there is a silver lining.
The silver lining, of course, is that McConnell is finally being exposed for his shameless refusal to put country over party. It’s something that even the unflappable McConnell is going out of his way to play damage control on.
As I wrote last week, Mitch McConnell – who usually doesn’t care about criticism – appears to be in a panic over the new narrative that he is a puppet of Vladimir Putin.
Maybe the public backlash will remind the Kentucky senator which country he is supposed to be representing – but don’t count on it.
