If Donald Trump can’t keep three key rust belt states – Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – in his column next November, then his chances of remaining in the White House are slim.
A new poll released on Monday shows that one of those states, Michigan, is already slipping away from the flailing president.
According to the survey conducted by Climate Nexus, Trump would lose Michigan to any of the Democratic candidates polled if the election were held today.
As is the case with other national and statewide polls, former vice president Joe Biden performs strongest against Trump with 49 percent supporting the former VP and just 36 percent of Michigan voters saying they plan to vote for the current president.
The survey shows Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren beating Trump by 11 points and 6 points, respectively.
The complete breakdown:
The disastrous poll results for Trump come as Democrats prepare for another round of primary debates in Detroit this week.
It will give the 2020 hopefuls a chance to further drive home the point that this president has abandoned the same rust belt voters he most relied on for his razor-thin Electoral College victory in 2016.
Polling strongly suggests that the best chance for the eventual Democratic nominee to win the White House is to carry Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – a combination of states that Trump won by less than 80,000 votes in 2016.
The picture in Pennsylvania is about as bleak for Trump as the one coming out of Michigan. According to RealClearPolitics.com, Biden leads Trump by double digits in the key state.
While there hasn’t been a lot of polling in Wisconsin yet, one poll released earlier this year showed Biden up 54 to 46 percent in the state.
If the eventual Democratic nominee carries all the states Hillary Clinton won in 2016 and flips these three rust belt states, Donald Trump will be sent packing and this national nightmare will finally come to an end.
