House Judiciary Democrats emerged from the Hope Hicks interview enraged by the White House counsel blocking every single question she was asked about the Trump presidency.
Rep. Eric Swalwell said, “I’ll say this about Ms. Hicks. Almost every question I observed, you know, she’s refusing to answer, and that’s a problem.”
Rep. David Cicilline said, “It’s an ongoing effort by the President Of The United States by preventing Congress to get the answers we deserve. The president is continuing to engage in a cover-up.”
Politico added more Democratic reaction:
We’re watching obstruction of justice in action,” said Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.).
“It’s a farce,” added Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who said Hicks at one point tried to answer a question about an episode involving former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski only to be cut off by the White House counsel.
“She made clear she wouldn’t answer a single question about her time unless the White House counsel told her it was okay,” an exasperated Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) said in an interview. “She couldn’t even characterize her testimony to the special counsel.”
It is telling that even when Hicks tried to answer questions about her time in the White House, the White House counsel obstructed and blocked her answers. The Judiciary Committee needs to get Hicks back in the room without the White House Counsel. House Democrats had to sit there and watch Trump obstruction unfold before their own eyes. Trump is going to try to derail the entire process. Democrats are making progress because a witness showed up, but there is more work to be done, as the goal is to get the facts by removing Trump obstruction and interference.
