House To Vote To Hold Barr And McGahn In Contempt Next Tuesday

Last updated on September 25th, 2023 at 08:54 pm

The House will vote next Tuesday (June 11) to hold Attorney General William Barr and former White House Counsel Don McGahn in contempt of Congress.

William Barr and Don McGahn to be Held In Contempt

House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, “Next Tuesday, I will bring a resolution to the House Floor forcing Attorney General Barr and former White House Counsel McGahn to comply with Congressional subpoenas that have been duly issued by the House Judiciary Committee. The resolution will authorize the Judiciary Committee to pursue civil action to seek enforcement of its subpoenas in federal court. It also authorizes House Committees that have issued subpoenas as part of their oversight and investigation responsibilities to seek civil enforcement of those subpoenas when they are ignored. This Administration’s systematic refusal to provide Congress with answers and cooperate with Congressional subpoenas is the biggest cover-up in American history, and Congress has a responsibility to provide oversight on behalf of the American people.”

The contempt vote paves the way for the House to sue McGahn and Barr for documents, and to compel their testimony. Democrats have yet to lose a single court case when they have challenged Trump’s stonewalling of their investigations. The legal victories are coming and the contempt vote is significant because it will e key step toward Democrats finally getting access to the witnesses and information that they should have been given from the beginning.
Don McGahn’s testimony could be particularly damning as he was an eyewitness to the Trump obstruction of justice that was laid out in the Mueller report. Trump is playing checkers, but Nancy Pelosi is playing chess, and she is using a strategy that will checkmate this president.
