House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) scored a big win for Democrats as the DOJ has agreed to hand over Mueller documents.
Chairman Schiff said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA:
The Department of Justice has accepted our offer of a first step towards compliance with our subpoena, and this week will begin turning over to the Committee twelve categories of counterintelligence and foreign intelligence materials as part of an initial rolling production. That initial production should be completed by the end of next week.
As a result of the Department’s acceptance, the business meeting has been postponed. The Committee’s subpoena will remain in effect, and will be enforced should the Department fail to comply with the full document request.
The Department has repeatedly acknowledged the Committee’s legitimate oversight interest in these materials. I look forward to, and expect, continued compliance by the Department so we can do our vital oversight work.
Speaker Pelosi’s strategy of subpoenas and winning in court is working. Trump lost a bid to block his accounting firm from complying with a House subpoena, and Schiff has been able to get Mueller documents from the DOJ through a subpoena. Some Democrats are impatient and they want to run before they walk on impeaching Trump, but Democrats are building a case against Trump, and that process while not as flashy as impeaching the president is getting information and yielding results without jeopardizing Democratic plans of keeping the House and winning the White House in 2020.
Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic committee chairs know what they are doing. It is politically popular with some of the Democratic base to call for impeachment, but there is no need to rush when impeachment won’t remove Trump, and House Democrats are already winning.
