House Dem Tells His Party To Take Immediate Legal Action Against Trump Before It’s Too Late

Donald Trump’s Department of Treasury announced on Monday that it will ignore the law and refuse to hand over the president’s tax returns.

In response, Democrats appear ready to drop their timid attitude toward Trump and take concrete steps to rein in him before it’s too late.

“We need immediate legal action,” said House Ways and Means Committee member Rep. Lloyd Doggett. “If Trump once again faces only Republican silence and Democratic timidity, he will continue to erode our democracy by assuming more and more power.”

The tough response from the Democratic lawmaker comes after the chairman of House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Richard Neal, said that he is considering his legal options in response to Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin’s blatant disregard for the law.

“Today, Secretary Mnuchin notified me that the IRS will not provide the documents I requested under Section 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code,” Rep. Neal said. “I will consult with counsel and determine the appropriate response.”

Democrats need to ramp up the pressure

The time for caution is over for the Democrats. They must work swiftly and with a sense of urgency to rein in this president before it’s too late.

And given the frequency with which Trump is ignoring Congress and acting as an authoritarian ruler, the point of no return may be approaching more quickly than some Democrats think.

Some in the party believe that moving too aggressively to hold Trump accountable may be seen by voters as an overreach meant to hurt Trump politically – but this goes well beyond politics.

As Rep. Doggett said on Monday, Democrats have been too timid. They have been playing it too safe by urging voters to wait until 2020 to hold Trump accountable.

But given Trumps more frequent and egregious abuses of power, waiting a year and a half may be too late.
