Rep. Eric Swalwell Calls For The Impeachment Of William Barr

House Intel and Judiciary Committee member, and Democratic presidential candidate, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) called for the impeachment of Attorney General William Barr.

Eric Swalwell calls for Barr to be impeached

Rep. Swalwell said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA:

Attorney General William Barr has proved himself unworthy of the mantle of America’s top law enforcement officer, choosing to act as the President’s lawyer instead of ours, and he cannot be allowed to continue in this role. His public prejudgment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation should have precluded his confirmation; once confirmed, he should have recused himself.

Since taking office, he has parroted the President in accusing our Intelligence Community of illicit spying on the Trump campaign, repeatedly and purposefully mischaracterized the content of Mueller’s report, lied to Congress, refused to turn over subpoenaed documents, and refused to testify to the House Judiciary Committee without dictating the terms of the hearing. He is a real-time obstructer who is working overtime to make sure Congress can’t conduct its constitutionally mandated oversight of the Executive Branch; he must be held accountable. I’ve already said Attorney General Barr should resign; if he refuses, Congress must begin the process of removing him.

Impeachment is becoming a real possibility for Barr

Speaker Pelosi said that Barr committed a crime when he lied to Congress. The chorus within Congress and the country at large are getting louder in their calls for Barr’s impeachment. William Barr will not resign. The only way to get rid of him as attorney general is through the impeachment process. The impeachment process may bring about enough public pressure, or it looks like Barr will be removed from his position, then maybe, he would consider resigning, but this attorney general has shown that he will never do the right thing and step down on his own.

As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Swalwell’s words carry more weight than a regular member of Congress. After Mueller testifies, the House Judiciary Committee is going to have a decision to make on the impeachment of Barr.
