Robert DeNiro was on “Saturday Night Live” again last night doing an outstanding job playing the role of former special counsel Robert Mueller.
In the show’s cold opening sketch Alec Baldwin was also featured portraying President Donald Trump, doing his usual excellent job as well.
The skit ridiculed how Attorney General Bill Barr (played by Beck Bennett) attempted to cover up Mueller’s report, and how Barr’s comments were further spun by Trump to the point that he claimed total vindication.
In the opening Barr said, “You might want to sit down for this one.”
Trump responded, saying, “Guess what, guess what, guess what, Daddy is about to freak.”
“I am submitting these 380 pages,” Mueller’s character said.
“I am writing almost four pages,” Barr’s character responded.
“I am reading zero pages,” Trump’s character added. “But Sean Hannity has read it and he’s so excited, he texted me an eggplant.”
Mueller then said, “on the charge of obstruction of justice, we have not drawn a definitive conclusion.”
And Barr said, “But I have, and Trump is clean as a whistle.”
And Trump shouted, “Free at last, free at last!”
Then Mueller said, “As for conspiracy or collusion, there were several questionable incidents, but we cannot prove a criminal connection.”
Barr said, “No collusion, No diggity!”
Then Trump took out an air horn and blew it in celebration of “no collusion.”
Mueller then added, “However we have indicted 34 people in connection with this probe.”
Barr commented, “Most of them are very good people.”
And Trump said “The pardons are already in the mail!”
Mueller then clarified “I’ve included hundreds of pages of evidence.”
And Barr added, “Most of it provided on live television by the president himself.”
And Trump exclaimed, “Russia, if you’re watching, go to bed. Daddy has won!”
Then Mueller said, “And I should remind everyone that there are still several other ongoing investigations.”
And Barr said, “One, maybe two, tiny little investigations.”
At which point Trump celebrated, saying,
“And they’re investigations into Democrats, television shows that have been mean to me, and Puerto Rico. That’s right, I want my paper towels back Amigos.”
The skit continued as the topics of Russian collusion and obstruction of justice
“In conclusion, it is my hope this report will be made public with a few redactions,” Mueller’s character said.
“Hello, redactions!” Barr replied.
“We’re going to block out everything except the words no and collusion,” Trump’s character said.
“P.S. can’t wait to see what the Southern District of New York has in store for Trump,” De Niro added.
Saturday Night Live Nailed It
Although they did it in a humorous way, SNL brought up the basic truths of the Mueller probe and its cover up by William Barr and Donald Trump.
Barr and Trump are keeping the Mueller report from Congress and from the American people. If it is eventually given over, it will contain redactions that will cover up most of the incriminating evidence.
But as the Mueller character points out there are many other investigations going on in federal and state prosecutors’ offices, including the Southern District of New York.
And we all “can’t wait to see what the Southern District of New York has in store for Trump.”
