Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) may end up being the happiest person in Washington, according to a new report this morning.
After Attorney General Bill Barr’s summary report indicated there was no criminal collusion between the Trump 2016 campaign and Russia, many Democrats were down in the dumps — but not Nancy Pelosi.
There are two big reasons that the Speaker is feeling upbeat right now:
- The conclusion of the Mueller probe allows her to shift the public focus to the Democrats’ legislative agenda, which is where she wants it,
- It also silences a small but very vocal minority in her caucus who want to impeach Trump, an effort that Pelosi has discouraged.
Yesterday Pelosi met with her caucus and delivered a clear message: Don’t let Barr’s letter summarizing the Mueller report get you down.
She said that her fellow Democrats now must focus on bread-and-butter policy issues, such as health care, jobs and a better government.
Doing that is what won them control of the House in November’s Blue Wave election.
During the meeting Pelosi said:
“This is really important today because we must, with all that is going on, stay focused on our purpose.”
Her pep talk to the troops came after Trump and other Republicans took an unwarranted “victory lap” because of Barr’s short letter.
Most Democrats had expected the Mueller probe to uncover damning proof of a criminal conspiracy, and even though that could still happen, people were still let down by Barr’s letter.
But Pelosi has long urged caution in her approach to the Mueller’s investigation. So she has put a very positive spin on “all that is going on.”
She said:
“Some people are viewing it as a glass half-full, glass half-empty. I think half-full. There’s so many indictments that came out of what he did. People will go to jail from what his investigation is about.”
“Be calm. Take a deep breath. Don’t become like them,” she added, referring to Republicans. “We have to handle this professionally, officially, patriotically, strategically.”
Then she added:
“Let’s just get the goods.”
Other Democratic leaders echoed Pelosi’s view.
“Nowhere in the ‘For the People’ agenda does it talk about Russia,” said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Caucus.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said:
“We have been in a place for a long period of time where we said impeachment was a distraction and that we were not pursuing impeachment.”
Following Nancy Pelosi May Lead to a 2020 Blue Wave
Nancy Pelosi has been around Washington a long time and is one of the best leaders the Democratic Party has ever had. She knows that her approach is not only best for her party, but it is also best for the country.
By following Nancy Pelosi’s lead Democrats will very likely find that the 2020 election will turn into another Big Blue Wave.
