Democrats Outsmart Mitch McConnell On Green New Deal Sham Vote

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been giddy over bringing the Green New Deal up for a sham political vote, but Democrats saw through the scam.

The Washington Post reported:

Yet the vote amounts to a political show vote as President Trump and Republicans deride the Green New Deal, but few in Congress have worked on crafting a bipartisan approach to deal with climate change.

….

To avoid an intraparty fight, many Democrats, including those who introduced the Green New Deal, are planning to vote “present” on their resolution.

….

Democrats have countered by calling McConnell’s maneuver a “sham,” saying the vote is being held without any hearings or expert testimony, all merely in an effort to scuttle meaningful legislative efforts on climate change.

Senate Democratic leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called out McConnell’s scam, “With this exercise, the Republican Majority has made a mockery of the legislative process. It is a political act, a political stunt. Everyone here knows it’s a stunt, including the Majority Leader himself. He put something on the floor and then votes no. What’s the point of that other than showing how hypocritical this act is? But with this exercise, they have also elevated the issue in a way I am sure they never intended. And for that, I want to thank them because now we’re finally talking about climate change.

Democrats saw through McConnell’s games

McConnell’s vote isn’t a serious policy action. The Senate Majority Leader was playing games, because he wanted to get Senate Democrats on the record supporting “socialism.” While he was on the Hill today, Trump admitted that he is going to run against the Green New Deal and “socialism.” Republicans have no real agenda. Trump is unpopular and so the vast majority of Republican policies, so they are whipping up some socialism as a 2020 opponent.

Democrats saw through what McConnell was doing and have responded with the Senate equivalent of take you sham resolution and shove it.

McConnell’s latest strategic blunder did do one thing. It got America talking about climate change and showed how far out of touch old ma Trump and his white man party are with the rest of the country.
