Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said that he sees all green lights for his potential presidential candidacy and that he will make a formal announcement by the end of the month.
Swalwell was asked by NBC’s Hallie Jackson about the timing of his announcement during an interview on MSNBC, and he answered, “By the end of the month, I’ll make a decision. And I’ll just tell you now, the last 18 months I went to 26 states across the country, and I see why people work hard. I see what they expect it to add up to. That they do better and dream bigger. And on most floors of most buildings and most blocks of most neighborhoods, that promise of America is not coming to most people. So first in my family to go to college, someone who has led Future Forum, a generational group in the Congress and someone who has defended our democracy that’s been on the line, that’s a candidacy that could connect and bring that promise to all Americans.”
Jackson said that Swalwell sounds like a candidate already, and he replied, “I’m going to decide by the end of the month, but I see all green lights. I know why I would run and who I could help and I think there’s a candidacy that could win.”

Rep. Swalwell‘s candidacy has pretty much been an open secret in California politics. It will be interesting to see how Swalwell‘s potential entry into the race impacts the candidacy of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) who has had California all to herself since she announced. On paper, Rep. Swalwell is a good candidate. The problem that he will face is the same as many of the other Democrats who have announced.
Swalwell lacks the national profile to fit immediately into the top tier of the Democratic field of Biden, Sanders, Harris, and O’Rourke. Rep. Swalwell will likely be in the second tier and he will have to build momentum and break out of the pack. With a field so large, strong performances in the early primaries and caucuses will make or break many a candidacy.
Eric Swalwell has a chance, but he has a lot of work ahead of him to stand out in an increasingly overcrowded Democratic field.
