Former Vice President Joe Biden isn’t only expected to launch a presidential campaign within the next few weeks, but new reporting indicates that he could select a running mate early in the primary process.
According to CNN, Biden is considering revealing his VP choice early to raise the excitement level around his candidacy and to keep the focus on defeating Donald Trump in 2020.
“Joe Biden’s advisers are looking at potentially having him name his running mate early,” said CNN’s Mark Preston. “To do so would be to try to solidify his position with the Democratic base.”
Preston noted that former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams is a name that has popped up as Biden gets closer to a potential campaign announcement.

The news that Biden is considering an early reveal on his running mate comes days after the former vice president met with Stacey Abrams, a rising Democratic star who nearly won the 2018 governor’s race in deep-red Georgia.
Abrams also received rave reviews after delivering the official Democratic response to Trump’s State of the Union address earlier this year in which.
It’s unclear if Biden is potentially “grooming” Abrams to be his running mate, but adding her to the ticket would, indeed, give a jolt to his candidacy.
As Abrams said in her rebuttal to Trump’s address to Congress this year, “Black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party, and we can’t take that for granted. Period.”
Choosing Stacey Abrams as his running mate would be an acknowledgment by Biden that he understand what fuels the Democratic base. It could help the former vice president solidify his standing in the early primary polls, which consistently show him leading the other candidates.
Regardless of Joe Biden’s ultimate decision, it’s clear that the Democratic primary race is about to get even more exciting.
