Rep. Al Green (D-TX) broke with House Democratic leadership by arguing that those who love America should embrace the impeachment of Donald Trump.
Rep. Green said on MSNBC‘s The Beat with Ari Melber, “This has been the position I’ve held now for some time. Many, many weeks. I went to the floor much earlier and I explained that I thought the president should be impeached. A good many people agree. Those who differ with me, I I love my country. Because I love my country, I believe that we must not allow political expediency to trump the moral imperative to do the right thing. I don’t think we should allow an unfit president to remain in office. Many people will talk about his unfitness and go so far as to say he should be impeached but not want to take that final step forward. The constitution allows it. It’s something that it demands.”

Rep. Green makes a compelling argument for impeaching Trump now, but the problem is that the Republican-controlled Senate is unlikely to convict Trump. In fact, Republicans might use impeachment to rally their voters to victory in 2020. If Trump wins a second term and Democrats have already tried impeachment, what remedy would they have left?
Morally, Trump should be impeached, but there is more to consider than the investigation and vote in the House. If the evidence takes them there, Democrats should impeach Trump, but if they don’t have the evidence, impeachment could backfire and cost Democrats in 2020.
Impeachment is coming. The debate among Democrats is down to when it will begin.
