Wisconsin’s new Democratic governor issued an executive order on Monday to pull his state’s National Guard troops from the southern border because, despite the claims by Donald Trump, there is no so-called national emergency.

In a tweet, Gov. Tony Evers said there is “not ample evidence to support the president’s contention of a national security crisis at our southwestern border.”

“Therefore, there is no justification for the ongoing presence of Wisconsin National Guard personnel at the border,” he added.

According to The Hill, “The troops were ordered to the border in June of last year by then-Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R). That came after President Trump in April ordered border states to send National Guard troops to the border for extra border security.”

Walker, of course, was swept out of power in last year’s blue wave, losing to Evers by roughly 30,000 votes in a state Trump won in 2016.

More evidence that elections matter

What Monday’s move by the new Democratic governor in Wisconsin further demonstrates is that elections really do matter.

With a Democrat now running the state, Wisconsin’s National Guard troops – 112 to be exact – will no longer be used as political props on the southern border, a drain of resources that could be much more useful elsewhere.

As The Hill also noted on Monday, Wisconsin joins California and New Mexico, both of which have announced that they are pulling troops from the southern border this month.

While Republicans join Donald Trump in ginning up fear and phony crises to keep their base riled up, Democrats are governing responsibly.
