Senate Democrats have introduced a resolution to block Trump’s ‘national emergency’ declaration and construction of his wall.
In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said:
If the president’s emergency declaration prevails, it will fundamentally change the balance of powers in a way our country’s founders never envisioned. That should be a serious wake up call to senators in both parties who believe in the constitutional responsibility of Congress to limit an overreaching executive.
This issue transcends partisan politics, and I urge all senators – Democrats and Republicans – to support this resolution to terminate the president’s emergency declaration when it comes up for a vote in the Senate. Identical companion legislation to the House resolution will soon be introduced in the Senate.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said that Trump’s undermine Congress and dubious constitutionally. She added, “If it’s a ‘clean’ disapproval resolution, I will support it.”
More Republicans are expected to join Senate Democrats in supporting the resolution, and with only three more Republicans needed for passage, it is likely that the resolution will pass.
The key is how many Republicans cross over to join with Democrats against Trump. If it is a handful, Trump can veto the resolution and the battle will head to court, but if 15-20 Republicans bolt, Trump will have a real problem, and it will show the courts that Trump is acting in defiance of the will of Congress.
The battle is on as Democrats are out to fulfill the will of the people to stop Trump’s wall.
