Last night’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) brutally mocked Donald Trump for declaring a bogus national emergency to build his border wall. Actor Alec Baldwin performed the “cold open” segment of the show, impersonating Trump’s White House address announcing the declaration.

“I’m here to declare a very urgent, important national emergency,” Baldwin began. “This is a big one, so I don’t want to waste any time. That’s why first I would like to blow my own horn a little bit. I had a great health exam, I’m still standing 6’7″, 185 pounds — shredded!”
“Let’s cut to the chase, folks. We need wall. Okay? We have a tremendous amount of drugs flowing into the country from the southern border — or the brown line as many people have asked me not to call it,” he continued.
“That’s why we need wall. Because wall works. Wall makes safe,” he argued. “You are not having to be smart to understand. In fact, it’s easier to understand if you are not that smart.”
“You can see why I have to fake this national emergency, right? I have to, because I want to. It’s really simple,” he explained.
Baldwin went on to also mock Trump’s bigotry by showing him do impersonations of different minorities.
The segment showed Trump taking questions from journalists, but not NBC, because “they suck.”
The actor playing CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta then asked a question, and Baldwin’s Trump responded:
“Oh, seriously, man, how do you keep getting in this room? I would love to build a wall around Jim.”
The reporter then cited numbers showing undocumented immigrants commit crimes at lower levels than citizens and Baldwin replied:
“Those numbers are faker than this emergency.”
He then added:
“This is a total emergency, a five-alarm blaze and I need to go to Mar-a-Lago to play some golf.”

After Baldwin’s opening, the SNL cast returned to the subject of Trump’s emergency declaration during their “Weekend Update” segment.
Co-Host Colin Jost reported:
“President Trump declared a national emergency yesterday and argued that we need a wall to stop the flow of drugs into our country.”
“And to demonstrate how bad the problem is, Trump spent 21 minutes doing his impression of a coke addict.”
Jost then played a supercut of ridiculous quotes from Trump’s actual press conference, including a clip of Trump’s “sing-song voice” predicting the path the court challenges to declaration would take.
Afterwards Jost expressed alarm, saying:
“Oh, my God. That guy controls our nuclear weapons. Watching that was like if School House Rock had a stroke.”
His co-host Michael Che then hilariously added:
“We’ve been making fun of this dude and his dumbass wall for so long, I got to be honest, now I kind of want to see the wall.”
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer than joined the two co-hosts to further pick apart Trump and demonstrate how totally off the wall he really is.
As Donald Trump continues to try to undermine our democracy and subvert the U.S. Constitution, it’s good we have SNL to keep things in perspective, and to make us laugh.
