Parkland Dad Warns GOP They’ll Lose Senate For Ignoring Real National Emergency Of Gun Violence

Last updated on February 18th, 2019 at 02:08 pm

The father of Jaime Guttenberg, who was killed in the devastating school shooting in Parkland last year, had a warning for Republicans on Saturday: Either take action on gun violence or lose the Senate in 2020.

During an interview with MSNBC‘s Joy Reid, Fred Guttenberg applauded Democrats in the House for taking action on gun violence and he warned Senate Republicans to follow suit if they want to keep their jobs in 2020.

“We’ll pass common-sense gun safety legislation in the House this term,” he said. “It may hit a wall in the Senate, and it will flip the Senate if that happens.”

Guttenberg said:

I am so proud of what happened in the House this week. I’m so proud of those who committed to doing something about this. During this campaign cycle, I got used to saying a lot, we’re going to fire those who will not do something about this issue and we will hire those who will. Well, that happened. And when people get fired for not doing their job, everyone else around them notices. It’s going to happen in the Senate next. We’ll pass common-sense gun safety legislation in the House this term. It may hit a wall in the Senate, and it will flip the Senate if that happens.

Gun violence is the real national emergency

If there was an issue that warranted a national emergency declaration, it’s the gun violence epidemic that continues to plague communities all across this country.

We saw it on Friday when five more Americans were killed in a mass shooting in Aurora, Illinois, and a year ago when a gunman killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

If Republicans continue to hold this issue hostage as the body count grows – all while allowing Trump to unlawfully concoct a national emergency to get his border wall – then more of them will lose their jobs in 2020.
