Former CIA Director John Brennan Calls Trump’s Blind Arrogance A National Security Threat

Last updated on February 2nd, 2019 at 02:38 am

Former CIA Director John Brennan warned on Wednesday that Donald Trump‘s blind arrogance is putting America’s national security at risk.

In an interview with MSNBC‘s Chris Matthews, Brennan expressed his outrage at the president’s latest attacks on his own intelligence community.

“He does have this sense that he knows better than everybody else,” the former CIA director said. “The more he just goes in with his gut and the less he listens to intelligence and diplomats and our military officials and generals, the less he is going to be able to protect our national security.”

Brennan said:

I don’t want to insult 5-and 8-year-olds, quite frankly, but he does have this petulance. He does have this sense that he knows better than everybody else. He says he knows military better than generals. He knows intelligence better than intelligence professionals. He knows technology better than anyone else. It is just something that he is blinded by his own arrogance and it’s very unwarranted because the world stage is a very complex one and the more he just goes in with his gut and the less he listens to intelligence and diplomats and our military officials and generals, the less he is going to be able to protect our national security.

Earlier in the day, Brennan also hit Trump on Twitter, saying, “All Americans, especially members of Congress, need to understand the danger you pose to our national security.”

Trump is a threat to U.S. national security

Trump’s latest temper tantrum directed toward his own intelligence community comes after intelligence chiefs contradicted his assertions on Iran, North Korea, Russia and China.

Not only did the intelligence community conclude that North Korea is not giving up its nuclear stockpiles and Iran isn’t in the process of making a bomb, but they found that Russia and China are a growing cyber threat to the United States. The assessments contradict Trump‘s false claims about these foreign adversaries.

Instead of crafting sound national security policy based on intelligence community findings, Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to lash out, telling intelligence officials to “go back to school.”

Good presidents surround themselves with experts and professionals so that they can make informed decisions about the world they’re leading.

With Donald Trump, it is blind arrogance that’s calling the shots – and as John Brennan warned, it’s putting the security of our country at risk.
