The Chairman of the American Conservative Union, Matt Schlapp, went down in flames while appearing on CNN’s New Day on Monday. He first made the argument that Donald Trump’s loss to Nancy Pelosi was a win because he really got what he wanted. But after being challenged on that ridiculous statement he immediately backtracked and tried to make another argument, saying that the showdown with Pelosi was a political victory for Trump because it showed his followers that he was still fighting.
New Day Co-Host Alisyn Camerota first asked Schlapp if he was “happy or disappointed” that Trump “reopened the government without any money for his border wall.” Camerota appeared shocked when Schlapp said Trump won the shutdown battle because he got what he wanted.
“There’s $211 million in the CR for barriers, which is $1.3 billion annualized. As you know we have over 600 miles of barriers on the southern border that Democrats voted for and paid for,” Schlapp said, adding that “a lot of semantics and spin” had muddied the issue. “I think a lot of Democrats realize that looking like they’re against border security is bad politics.”
“Are you trying to say this was a win for the president?” a surprised Camerota responded, causing the conservative to try to walk back his comments
“No, I don’t think it was a win at all,” replied Schlapp, who started to stammer and tried to find a way out of the hole he had dug for himself.
“The fact — look. Trump’s brand, number one brand, is that he fights. For conservatives and Republicans and Trump supporters, which are distinct categories, they like it when he fights.” Schlapp continued. He then added that what Trump’s shutdown did for him was that it showed his supporters how far the president was “willing to go” to fight for his promised border wall.
“His brand is also deal making and that didn’t go so well over these 35 days,” shot back a very skeptical Camerota.
During his appearance, Schlapp also made clear that Republicans should take Senator Kamala Harris very seriously and should not be overly confident about winning the 2020 election.
“American Conservative Union Chair @mschlapp calls Kamala Harris “a very impressive spokesperson for her cause,” adding, “I don’t think we should be confident or cocky about the 2020 election.”

Schlapp is not dumb, because he knows that no matter how much he tries to spin it, Donald Trump lost a huge battle to Nancy Pelosi, and his chances of reelection in 2020 are growing smaller every day.
