Trump Is Polling At 41-42% Against Possible 2020 Democratic Opponents

One of the nation’s leading survey firms, Public Policy Polling (PPP) released a new poll this week showing how President Donald Trump stacks up against various possible Democratic candidates for the 2020 presidential nomination.

The new poll from PPP makes very clear that with slightly over 21 months until the next presidential election Trump is “a clear underdog for reelection.”

In the poll Trump receives just 41% or 42% in head to head matchups against seven possible Democratic candidates for president.

The poll results for each of the seven Democrats are as follows:

One very interesting result of this poll is that it shows Trump’s expected presidential vote totals almost exactly the same as his current job approval numbers, which are also slightly above 40%. In a recent poll nearly 60% of Americans disapproved of the job Trump is doing as president, making his reelection doubtful at this point, although theoretically his chances could improve over the next two years.

“It really doesn’t matter which Democratic hopeful you test against him right now,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Voters prefer any of them over Trump at halftime of his Presidency.”

The shutdown situation is definitely hurting Trump’s cause, and over the past few weeks his approval numbers have dropped to record lows. Just 35% of American voters agree with the president’s position that the government should be kept closed until he gets funding for the wall, while 60% of voters disagree with this. 57% think Congress should vote today to reopen the government without funding the wall, to 38% who are opposed. 55% of voters pin the blame for the shutdown on Trump and the Republicans in Congress to 43% who blame the Democrats in Congress.

Another very interesting result from this poll is what it shows about a theoretical matchup between Trump and congressional Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. Respondents to the survey said they would prefer to have either Chuck Schumer (46-41) or Nancy Pelosi (47-44) over Donald Trump as President.

This new poll shows just how far Donald Trump has fallen in the estimation of American voters. Of course, things could get worse for the president, and they probably will as new revelations are made public from Bob Mueller, and new indictments are issued against Donald Trump and his criminal family.
