Articles of Impeachment Will Be Filed Against Trump Today

California Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman reportedly will file articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump when Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) convenes the new House of Representatives on Thursday. And speaking on NBC today, Pelosi said she would not rule out either impeachment or indictment of the president.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Sherman, who unsuccessfully attempted to file articles of impeachment against Trump in 2017, expects to be successful. He thinks he will find a more receptive audience now since Democrats will be in control of the House starting today.

“Sherman’s articles of impeachment accuse Trump of obstructing justice by firing former FBI Director James B. Comey, among other wrongdoing,” reports the Times.

“There is no reason it shouldn’t be before the Congress,” Sherman said in an interview. “Every day, Donald Trump shows that leaving the White House would be good for our country.”

According to the Times:

Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has ruled out pursuing impeachment for now, saying she will wait for the outcome of the special counsel investigation. Any impeachment would have to be bipartisan and “the evidence would have to be so conclusive,” she said on “PBS NewsHour” on the eve of the midterm election.”

But on Thursday morning, Pelosi refused to rule out impeachment proceedings.

She told NBC’s Today Show that “Democrats will wait and see what comes out of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report before deciding whether to impeach President Donald Trump.”

Then she added that impeachment “would be” very divisive, saying:

“We shouldn’t be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn’t avoid impeachment for a political reason.”

As NBC reported:

“Democrats will be able to pass articles of impeachment against the president, where they would then advance to the Senate for a trial. But with the Senate having a slight GOP majority, it’s unlikely that Trump would face a conviction and removal from office.”

Perhaps the biggest political and legal issue facing Donald Trump in 2019 will be whether he should be — and will be — indicted or impeached. Pelosi can control the impeachment process as Speaker of the House. But it is Rod Rosenstein and Robert Mueller who will decide if Trump is indicted.

Pelosi did express her opinion on the indictment question in her NBC interview, however.

Asked by “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie about the Department of Justice’s guidance that a sitting president cannot be indicted, Pelosi said that was not settled law. She added that “everything indicates” a “president can be indicted after he is no longer president of the United States.”
