Trump Brags That A Shutdown Will Last ‘For a Very Long Time’

President Donald Trump has a deadline of midnight tonight. If he doesn’t sign a bill providing money needed by key federal agencies by that time, there will be a partial government shutdown.

While millions of Americans look on with shock and horror, the president seems to be enjoying himself. On Friday he bragged that a federal government closure would drag on “for a very long time.”

Of course at the same time he tried to blame congressional Democrats for the potential shutdown, even though Republicans control the entire federal government.

He said that the Democrats would be held responsible if there’s no agreement to meet his demands for at least $5 billion of funding for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.

In fact it was just a week ago that Trump said he would be “proud” to shut down the government in the name of border security. “I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down,” he said while meeting with congressional Democratic leaders.

Now, as the midnight deadline approaches, Trump is vainly trying to make Democrats appear to be causing the problem which he in fact has brought on himself.

If he continues to take a hard line, Trump will throw hundreds of thousands of federal workers out of work just three days before Christmas.

The House passed the bill he wanted yesterday but it is certain to be rejected in the Senate. Still, he called upon the Senate’s Republican leader to garner enough Democratic votes to pass the House bill and send it to the White House.

Trump tweeted:

“Senator Mitch McConnell should fight for the Wall and Border Security as hard as he fought for anything. He will need Democrat votes, but as shown in the House, good things happen. If enough Dems don’t vote, it will be a Democrat Shutdown!”

At the same time, Trump said he expected Democrats “will probably vote against Border Security and the Wall even though they know it is DESPERATELY NEEDED. If the Dems vote no, there will be a shutdown that will last for a very long time. People don’t want Open Borders and Crime!”

The Senate has now been called back into session to consider the House bill, even though many senators already left Washington for the holidays.

The Senate had passed its own bipartisan bill earlier in the week to keep the government running, with no money for Trump’s wall. Both bills would extend government funding only through February 8.
