Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi tore into the president on Thursday as the federal government continues to creep closer to a shutdown.
In a press conference, Schumer and Pelosi said Donald Trump can throw as many temper tantrums as he wants but it’s not going to get him his border wall and it will only “hurt innocent people.”
“The Trump temper tantrum will shut down the government, but it will not get him his wall,” Schumer said in a fiery set of remarks alongside Pelosi.

Schumer said:
Leader Pelosi, Leader McConnell, and myself have done everything we can to avoid a shutdown but President Trump wants one. He’s asked for one 25 times and he said in front of us he’d be proud to shut down the government. It is nothing to be proud of. The bottom line is simple, the Trump temper tantrum will shut down the government, but it will not get him his wall. The bill that’s on the floor of the House, everyone knows will not pass the Senate. Speaker Ryan, Leader McCarthy have cynically put it on the floor of the House, knowing it can’t pass the Senate. Everyone knows it can’t the pass the Senate. It’s a cynical attempt — a cynical attempt – to just hurt innocent people and do just what President Trump wants, even though they probably know it is bad for the country.
This is not a scenario in which Donald Trump can frame a potential government shutdown as the fault of Democrats. He has completely boxed himself in.
Not only has Trump repeatedly said he would be proud to shut down the government over his wasteful border wall, but members of both parties have already agreed on a bipartisan plan without wall funding that would keep the government open. The Senate approved the legislation on Wednesday night, but the president rejected it.
In other words, Donald Trump is going to single-handedly shut down the government because he can’t put aside his childish wall fantasy for the good of the country.
