Democrats Won’t Consider Impeachment Until After Mueller Report

Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), the incoming chair of the Congressional Black Caucus said that Democrats must first do oversight on Trump, protect Mueller, then consider impeachment if the evidence keeps coming out to justify it.

Rep. Bass said on MSNBC‘s The Beat with Ari Melber:

I think it’s about doing our job. And so it is possible that we might have to move forward with impeachment, especially if information keeps coming out where the president has been involved in illegal activity. I find it ironic that my Republican colleagues who often wave the flag of law and order are all of a sudden getting squishy over, well, these really aren’t serious offenses. So we are talking about the president of the United States. So I think it’s very important that we not jump the gun, that we be methodical about our approach. I believe the first step of that approach is to provide the oversight that Congress has not provided over the last two years.

…..

If more and more information comes out, that it clearly shows that the president has been involved in crimes, then, of course, it might come up on our agenda even before we want it to. But people do have to remember, and I know you know this, we can impeach every day of the week here in the House. He won’t be tried and convicted in the Senate. So if we move forward with impeachment, it is going to have to be dire. And I think it would be after the Mueller report and after more and more information comes out.

What Rep. Bass said echoes the statements of many House Democrats that evidence must be gathered and if the Mueller report merits it, they will consider impeachment. Democrats are playing this in a very intelligent way. They weren’t elected on a platform of impeaching Trump. They were given the House majority to check this president and to protect healthcare.

If the Mueller report or other evidence suggests that Trump committed crimes, they will consider impeachment, but they are not going to waste the new two years impeaching a president who will never be tried by the Republican majority Senate.

Democrats want the Mueller report; then they’ll consider impeachment.
