When the going gets tough, Donald Trump starts tweeting. And based on the escalating attacks that the Trump is directing toward Special Counsel Robert Mueller, things are getting very tough indeed for the President of the United States.
Trump started in early Thursday morning on Twitter doing exactly what he did until late at night on Wednesday: attacking special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
At 6:54 a.m. today the president tweeted:
Did you ever see an investigation more in search of a crime? At the same time Mueller and the Angry Democrats aren’t even looking at the atrocious, and perhaps subversive, crimes that were committed by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the Democrats. A total disgrace!
The fact that Trump is still attacking his 2016 presidential opponent Hillary Clinton is even more proof that he is getting desperate. He is now saying (with no evidence whatsoever) that the former First Lady, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of State committed “atrocious” and “subversive” crimes.
Given that it was recently revealed that he had asked the U.S. Attorney General to investigate Clinton for her non-existent crimes this kind of language coming from the White House is very disturbing. It seems to confirm everyone’s fears that he would like to subvert the rule of law and start arresting his political adversaries.
In a subsequent tweet referred to the Mueller probe as an “illegal Joseph McCarthy style Witch Hunt” and incorrectly stated that it has proven there was “NO Collusion with Russia.”
When will this illegal Joseph McCarthy style Witch Hunt, one that has shattered so many innocent lives, ever end-or will it just go on forever? After wasting more than $40,000,000 (is that possible?), it has proven only one thing-there was NO Collusion with Russia. So Ridiculous!
These early morning tweets were a continuation of what he had started on Wednesday night when he tweeted that “so much happening with the now discredited Witch Hunt.” “This total Hoax will be studied for years!”
But what was even more disturbing was that earlier in the day, he had retweeted what appeared to be a frightening warning to his critics and political adversaries, showing them behind bars.
Things seem to be really heating up in the Mueller probe.
This week the special counsel asserted in a court filing that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort violated his plea agreement by lying to the FBI and the special counsel team.
Also this week it was reported that Manafort’s attorney had been sharing information with lawyers for Trump about Manafort’s cooperation with the Mueller probe, which is clearly a violation of his plea deal. This also led to speculation that Manafort was angling for a presidential pardon.
Trump then increased speculation that Manafort is seeking a pardon by telling the New York Post on Wednesday that it was not “off the table.”
Wednesday, Trump threatened to declassify documents related to Russia that he claimed would damage Democrats. He has consistently claimed that the probe is run by a “gang” of Democrats.
It’s not clear what Donald Trump’s game is at this point. He may be playing a high stakes game of chicken with Bob Mueller, or he may just be running around like a chicken with his head cut off.
Everyone is now waiting for Bob Mueller’s next move — and for Donald Trump’s next unhinged tweetstorm. Nobody knows what will happen next, but it appears that things are coming to a head, and the nation’s fate may rest in the balance.
