While the Democratic Party‘s issue-focused campaign message helped them flip the most U.S. House seats in a generation, their post-victory behavior could potentially squander their newly gained political capital.
As MSNBC‘s Joy Reid said on Saturday, some Democrats are acting like they didn’t just get swept into victory.
Instead of focusing on the issues – like health care – that boosted Democrats in 2018, they are playing right into the GOP‘s hands by waging a war against Nancy Pelosi’s speakership.

Reid said:
You wouldn’t know it from listening to Massachusetts Democrat Seth Moulton, but Democrats just had their best midterm performance since the Watergate class of ’74. Now Moulton is leading a handful of right-of-center House Democrats, including Ohio’s Tim Ryan, who want to deny the speakership to the woman who helped lead them back to the majority twice, California congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. So far they are doing so without even a declared challenger, but the get Pelosi faction has found a face for their push isn’t white and male, Ohio congresswoman Marsha fudge, says that she is considering it, though none of themember of the anti-Pelosi faction can say how many votes they would have. They would need 218
Throughout the campaign, Republican candidates all across the country attempted to tie their Democratic opponents to Nancy Pelosi. It was hard to find any competitive race in which a GOP candidate didn’t run an ad mentioning her name.
Forget the substance of that strategy for a moment. What’s most important is that it failed. The attacks didn’t work. Despite GOP attempts to use Nancy Pelosi as a punching bag, Democrats still made historic gains and retook the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Instead of continuing to take the GOP‘s Pelosi bait, Democrats need to remember that they just put a shellacking on Republicans earlier this month, and they should focus on the issues that got them elected in the first place.
