President Donald Trump on Thursday tore into Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, saying that investigators have “gone absolutely nuts” and that they are “a disgrace” to the country.
“The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess. They have found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts,” Trump tweeted. “They are screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want. They are a disgrace to our Nation and don’t care how many lives the(y) ruin.”
He then focused his ire on Mueller, a former FBI director. He once again accused Mueller of having conflicts of interest, but provided no evidence to support his accusation. Mueller is a lifelong Republican and served under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
“These are Angry People, including the highly conflicted Bob Mueller, who worked for Obama for 8 years. They won’t even look at all of the bad acts and crimes on the other side,” he said. “A TOTAL WITCH HUNT LIKE NO OTHER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!”
The verbal barrage from the president came as Trump’s legal team is in the process of finalizing written answers to special counsel Mueller. They reportedly deal with questions about whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia and/or other foreign countries during his 2016 presidential campaign.
Trump has always denied that there was any collusion with Russia, although his TV lawyer Rudy Giuliani once said that even if there was collusion it was not a crime and there was nothing wrong with doing it.
Since its inception Trump has dismissed the Mueller probe as what he labels “a witch hunt.” Last month Giuliani told Bloomberg News that a face-to-face interview was “off the table.” But he did not say that it was definitely ruled out however.
The Associated Press reported this week that Trump’s closest advisers have concerns now that Mueller has been secretly compiling large amounts of incriminating information. They believe he has presented evidence to grand juries and is in a position where he could soon issue a large number of new indictments or a critical final report that would detail his findings.
Trump had always blamed Jeff Sessions for the existence of the Mueller probe, saying that if the then-Attorney General had not recused himself from the Russia probe last year a special counsel would never have been appointed.
Sessions of course was forced to resign by Trump last week. He was replaced by Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker. Whitaker has been facing calls from Democrats in Congress to recuse himself from the Russia probe due to his criticism of the investigation. Several Top Democrats also issued a press release yesterday saying they are opening a fraud investigation into Whitaker’s behavior before joining the Justice Department.
