Oprah Winfrey is going to Georgia this week to campaign for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams according to BuzzFeed News.
Winfrey will reportedly make two public appearances with the popular Abrams, who is in the middle of a very close race for governor. Reports say they are planning two town hall meetings which will allow them to have real conversations with Georgia voters.
The report also said that Winfrey will knock on doors in the Atlanta area in order to encourage voters there to go cast ballots during the final days of Georgia early voting.
“Oprah Winfrey has inspired so many of us though the years with her unparalleled ability to form real connections and strengthen the bonds of family and community,” Abrams said. “I am honored to have Oprah join me for uplifting and honest conversations with voters about the clear choice before us in this election and the boundless potential of Georgians.”
The news about Winfrey campaigning for Abrams comes at a good time for her campaign. There is now less than a week before the general election and Abrams has a real chance to become the first African-American woman elected as a U.S. governor. Turnout decides close elections, so any help Oprah can give to Abrams’ “get out the vote” efforts may make a real — and possibly deciding — difference.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the closely watched Georgia governor’s race as a “toss-up” which means that right now it could turn either way. Also, a poll from Fox 5-Atlanta released on Tuesday showed that Abrams is in a tie with her GOP opponent, Brian Kemp, who currently is Georgia’s secretary of state.
Winfrey will appear alongside Abrams at the town hall meetings just one day before former President Obama travels to Georgia.
Obama, who has endorsed Abrams, is scheduled to host a rally in Atlanta on November 2 at the Forbes Arena at Morehouse College.
Last weekend actor Will Ferrell was spotted in Georgia going door to door canvassing for Democratic candidates Abrams.
