Special Counsel Robert Mueller has asked the FBI to investigate a right-wing conspiracy to bribe a woman to accuse Mueller of sexual misconduct.
The Atlantic reported:
An alleged scheme to pay off women to fabricate sexual-assault allegations against Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been referred to the FBI for further investigation, a spokesman for the special counsel’s office told The Atlantic. “When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the Special Counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation,” the spokesman, Peter Carr, told me in an email on Tuesday.
The special counsel’s office’s attention to this scheme and its decision to release a rare statement about it indicates the seriousness with which the office is taking the purported plot to discredit Mueller in the middle of an ongoing investigation.
The scheme by a group of far-right conspiracy theorists involved trying to bribe a woman who worked as a paralegal for Mueller in 1974 to accuse the Special Counsel of sexual assault. The right is desperate to discredit the reputation of the war hero with a pristine record in public service because they are terrified of what his investigation and report are going to reveal about Donald Trump.
A woman says that she was offered all of her credit card debt paid off and a check for $20,000 if she would make a false claim about Mueller. Such a claim would give Trump and congressional Republicans fuel to get rid of Mueller and shut the Russia investigation down, and that is really what all of this about.
Trump defenders are trying to find a way to shut the Russia investigation down, and they are willing to break the law in order to stop Mueller, but the Special Counsel seems to always be one step ahead, and the ones who could be going down are those who broke the law in their doomed effort to save Trump.
