Vice President Joe Biden is the overwhelming favorite to win the Democratic nomination according to a new 2020 poll.
A new CNN poll found:
In the race for the Democratic nomination to face Trump, former Vice President Biden leads a massive potential field. The poll asked Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents to choose their preferred presidential nominee among 16 possible candidates. Biden tops the list with 33% support, followed by independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the 2016 runner-up, at 13%. Sen. Kamala Harris of California follows at 9%, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts at 8%. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry garnered 5% support.
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who recently became a registered Democrat and spoke in New Hampshire on Saturday night, stands at 4% in the poll. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas, currently running against Sen. Ted Cruz, also lands at 4%. Less than 1% said they back Rep. John Delaney of Maryland, the only declared candidate in the field, and just 1% choose attorney Michael Avenatti, who has been visiting early primary and caucus states.
1). Biden is beloved by Democrats – Joe Biden leads with Democrats, liberals, and Democratic-leaning Independents. Biden is easily the popular candidate in the Democratic field. The former vice president also has a national operation waiting to kick into gear, and he has a direct connection to the Obama presidency. Unlike Hillary Clinton, Democratic voters don’t have as many doubts about Biden. Joe Biden is more popular than Hillary Clinton, which means that it is going to be more difficult for another candidate to break out of the field and challenge him.
2). Bernie Sanders still can’t attract Democratic voters – Registered Democratic voters remain reluctant to support Sanders. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) jumps to second place among Democrats trailing Biden 34%-11%. Sanders is third with 9%. A bigger problem for Sen. Sanders will be the popularity of Sen. Harris among liberals. Harris trails Biden 27%-19% with 9% supporting Sanders. Sen. Sanders benefitted from being the only non-establishment option in 2016, but with such a crowded field a lack of a solid Democratic constituency, he may struggle to find his footing in 2020.
3). It’s very early – Almost everything can be expected to change over the coming weeks and months, but the polls are starting to shift away from national name recognition, as coalitions are beginning to build. The rise of Sen. Harris is a sign that Democrats are beginning to size up their potential candidates. Joe Biden is the favorite, but Democrats could be in for quite a thrill ride in the 2020 primary season.
